Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, raised concerns this week about the use of TikTok by President Biden’s campaign. He said that the use of the platform by a prominent U.S. leader may downplay the issues raised regarding the popular app’s data security.
“I think that we still need to find a way to follow India, which has prohibited TikTok,” Senator Warner said. “I’m a little worried about a mixed message.”
Congress and many states have banned the use of TikTok on government devices due to the data access the Chinese-owned app has on the devices it is installed on. White House spokesperson John Kirby maintained that same day that President Biden’s campaign is using TikTok exclusively on devices not owned by the government.
“Nothing’s changed about the national security concerns, from the [National Security Council] perspective, about the use of TikTok on government devices,” Spokesman Kirby said. “That policy is still in place.”
